Information
The world needs new solutions to replace fossil-based materials and to improve packaging recyclability. Paperboard is an easily recyclable material made of renewable wood fibres.
Understanding and mitigating the carbon footprint has become a critical priority for brand owners. Product packaging makes part of pharma companies’ Scope 3 emissions. The Scope 3 emissions include elements such as raw material production of the packaging, its manufacturing, and end-of-life disposal.
Metsä Board’s light weight fresh fibre paperboards that are produced with high share of fossil-free energy enable the reduction in carbon footprint of a packaging.
In February 2025, Metsä Board published its first Climate Transition plan in line with the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requirements. The plan covers the time span until 2030 and present our strategic ambition and governance on climate matters, as well as our investments and climate actions related to production, products and the value chain. Metsä Board’s target is fossil-free production and products by 2030.
Metsä Board has conducted third-party verified environmental impact assessments which show the carbon footprint reduction potential in pharma packaging when optimising material choices. Fact-based calculated carbon footprint of a packaging not only ensures compliance but also enhances brand reputation and meets consumer expectations, whilst helping brand owners make factual material choices.
