Information
As the pharmaceutical industry continues to evolve, two primary trends have emerged in the realm of primary packaging: safety and sustainability.
To answer these needs, Syensqo, formerly part of the Solvay Group, has developed Diofan® Super B, an innovative ultra-high barrier coating for pharmaceutical blister films. This product represents a groundbreaking approach by combining superior barrier performance with substantial sustainability benefits. Diofan® Super B is a transparent, PFAS-free solution that achieves the highest standards of Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR), comparable to the state-of-the-art barriers of PCTFE and Aluminum. Additionally, it enables the design of blister films with a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to existing market alternatives. With one of the lowest Global Warming Potentials (GWP) among barrier materials, it offers a potential 70-80% reduction in carbon emissions per square meter of blister film compared to incumbent solutions.
To further reduce the carbon footprint of blister films, Syensqo has introduced Diofan® Ultra736, the latest addition to the Diofan product family. This material allows for the halving of the barrier layer thickness compared to standard PVDC solutions while maintaining the same level of barrier protection. This innovation directly reduces the carbon footprint of a standard medium barrier film by approximately 13%. The reduced coating thickness also leads to lower stock levels, decreased transport costs, and overall reduced raw material usage.
Sustainability in packaging is not solely about reducing carbon footprint; recycling is equally crucial. Recent studies by Syensqo demonstrate that Diofan®, when coated on substrates like PET or PVC, can be effectively recycled at scale, allowing consumer and industrial waste to be repurposed.
This presentation will delve into these topics, providing insights into leveraging the Diofan® portfolio for high-performance pharmaceutical packaging solutions that are both sustainable and economically viable. It marks a significant advancement in sustainable innovation within the industry.
